Contact your insurance company. Do not do anything to your home until you have contacted your insurance company. If you need to remove anything right away, make sure you document it with pictures or video. The insurance company should send out a water remediation specialist immediately.

Call the right specialists. Get a water remediation specialist in your home as soon as possible. These specialists remove all the damaged contents and start the process of drying everything out. I recommend bringing in a mold specialist as well once everything is dried out to make sure the remediation process was successful. You want to be sure everything is dry and all the mold has been removed before you start any remodeling. Of course you want to get back into your home as soon as possible, but rushing can lead to future mold problems.

Avoid dealing with mold on your own. For natural disasters the magnitude of Harvey, remediation should be left to a professional. If you have to start the process by yourself, take extreme caution. The more you disturb the mold, the greater the chance it can spread throughout your house and become hazardous to your health.

Turn off the power. Before you do any work, turn off the power to the areas you will be working on.

What Are Shingles?

Shingles are a roof and wall covering consisting of individual overlapping elements. On walls, they are generally fixed over sheathing or wood battens.

Shingles are laid in courses, or rows, from the bottom to the top of the wall, with each successive course overlapping the joint of the one below. They are typically applied in straight, single courses, but variations on this can be used to create interesting, decorative effects.

Data Watch: Renovation Firms Have Backlogs

Home renovation professionals are busy right now. That’s great news for the remodeling industry but means that homeowners need to plan ahead. Homeowners can anticipate wait times averaging 4.3 to 7.4 weeks before a pro can take on their project

research team finds. Design-build firms have the longest backlogs, at an average of 7.4 weeks. General contractors and remodelers are not far behind, with an average seven-week wait time.

“Backlog” refers to the delay or wait time an average firm faces before starting a new midsize project due to its current project commitments.

Busy with kitchens and baths. Nearly half (49%) of general contractors, remodelers and design-build companies on net report an increase in kitchen or bathroom renovations for the first half of 2017, compared with the same period a year ago.

“On net” means that the percentage of firms reporting increases minus the percentage of firms reporting decreases equals 49 percent. For example, if 54 percent of firms report increases and 5 percent of firms report decreases, that means 49 percent report an increase on net.

Data Watch: Optimism Remains High Across Home Renovation Sectors

Renovation professionals continued to feel confident about the market for their services during the second quarter of 2017, according to the latest Renovation Barometer report, released today. The quarterly index tracks optimism among architects, designers, general contractors and remodelers, design-build firms, building and renovation specialty firms, and landscape and outdoor specialty firms.

Confidence scores remain fairly stable relative to the first quarter of 2017. The biggest jump was among landscape and outdoor specialty firms — to be expected, as outdoor projects typically pick up during the spring and summer

Architects and designers feel confident. The barometer reading for architects was 63 during the second quarter, while designers scored 66 — both indicate high confidence in the market. The scores were the same a year ago.

The barometer is an index designed to measure business sentiment. Scores over 50 indicate that there are more firms reporting higher business activity compared with the previous quarter than firms reporting lower activity. The higher the number over 50, the greater the proportion of firms reporting quarterly increases in business activity rather than decreases.

Scores for contractors, remodelers and design-build firms remain steady. General contractors and remodeling firms scored a second-quarter barometer reading of 75, while design-build firms came in at 73. These scores indicate strong optimism among these sectors during the second quarter of this year, and the readings are in line with those for the same period in 2016.

What is a Roof Underlay?

The practice of lining roofs with a permanent sheet roofing underlay has become a universally accepted practice in the UK over the last fifty years and people are now asking: “Is roofing felt waterproof?” The sheeting or sarking felt, is laid over the supporting rafters or counter battens, and beneath the tile or slate battens. Previously it had been standard practice to underline slate or tile roofs with a mortar filling consisting of sand-lime mortar and reinforced with animal hair.

The secondary purpose of sarking felt is to provide a waterproof barrier and allow for the safe disposal of water that has collected on the upper surface of the underlay. This prevents damage to the internal spaces of the roof and building and creates an effective barrier against rain ingress as a result of damaged and cracked tiles/slates. So is roofing felt waterproof? Yes.

The third benefit of roofing underlay is that it provides an extra layer of insulation to prevent heat from escaping the building.

What type of roofing underlay should I use?

Roofing underlays are one of the most important elements of a roofing specification, and choosing the right product is essential to ensuring the finished structure is weather-resistant and provides years of trouble-free service. But there are many different types of roofing underlays on the market – so how do you know which product is the right choice for your project?

The first step to selecting a roofing underlay is to understand the available types, and what’s right for your project. Then you can narrow your selection by considering installation requirements and building regulations, as well as the unique features and benefits that certain products offer.

The different types of roof underlays

According to BS 5534, the British Standard for slating and tiling, and BS 5250, the code of practice for the control of condensation, there are two main types of roofing underlays: high resistance (non-breathable underlays) and low resistance (breathable or vapour-permeable membranes). Let’s look at these in more detail:

Non Breathable Underlays

These include both traditional bituminous products, as well as impermeable roofing membranes made from modern materials like polypropylene. They are often perceived as the affordable and functional option and are designed to provide an effective secondary barrier against wind pressure and water penetration.

Breathable Underlays

This is a newer type of product, and low-resistance underlays are generally more expensive than their non-breathable counterparts. However, they offer several benefits in addition to their breathability. For example, they’re lightweight, durable and easy to install, and they also provide some advantages when it comes to roof ventilation.

The basics of fitting

The felt is held to the rafters by first nailing direct and then by the wooden battens which are used for fixing the slates or for locating the nibs on the back of tiles.

The fascia board of most roofs stands above the level of the rafters so before laying the underfelt, you may want to cut and fix filler wedges to each rafter, or alternatively nail narrow strips of sheet material (such as exterior grade plywood) across the gaps between the rafters and the top of the fascia (see diagram below) – either method supports the underfelt otherwise there is a tendency for the felt to sag behind the fascia allowing water to collect which will eventually rot the felt and cause dampness to the soffit or wall below.

Fitting the felt

Starting at the bottom, run the felt along the roof and align the felt so that the lower edge extents over the fascia board by enough to reach the middle of the gutter. Starting at one end, nail the felt to the rafters using galvanised 25mm (1 inch) clout nails, put a nail in the middle of the width, and about 250mm (10 inches) in from the fascia on every other rafter (leave the top of the felt unsecured at this point). Work along the roof taking out any excess slack in the felt, but do not pull it tight; a slight sag between rafters is ideal as it will allow any water to drain down the felt.

When the first length is complete, lay the next layer of felt on top of the first so that it overlaps by at least 100mm (4 inches) – horizontal overlaps (where one roll ends, and the next one is started) should be at least 150mm (6 inches). Nail the second strip of underfelt to the rafters in the same manner as the first, with the lower nails positioned about 50mm (2 inches) from the edge so that it secures both this strip and the previously laid one.

Repeat this sequence with further strips of felt up to the top of the roof.

  • At the ridge, take the underlay over the top of the ridge by at least 150mm (6 inches), then, when installing the top run of felt on the second side of a pitch roof, take the felt over the felt from the first side and nail it through to the top of the rafters on the first side.
  • At a verge, lay the underlay about half way over the outer wall skin (or the outer rafter on an overhanging verge).
  • Where the roof abuts to a wall, either at the side or top, trim the underfelt to allow about 50mm (2 inches) onto the wall.
  • At a hip, take the underlay from the first side around the corner, and overlap from the second side by at least 150mm (6 inches). Make sure that all folds are done so that no pockets are left where would could collect.

Fixing the battens

Start at the lower edge of the roof and position the first batten so that the slates/tiles give the required overhang over the fascia – set the distance at both ends of the roof and run a string line between, check along the line to make sure that the distance is fairly consistent and satisfactory (fascia boards may sometimes wonder a little bit, but this can be checked by eye looking along the front face).

Cut the first batten to length, if one length will not cover the full roof length, cut is so that it is half way across the rafter where the next batten needs to meet it.

Nail the lower batten in place using the string line as a guide, use galvanised wire nails (60 mm ( 2½ inch) are normally adequate) to secure to each rafter – ideally the nails should penetrate the rafter timber by at least 40mm.

Once the lower batten is fixed, use the two ‘gauge’ spacers to position the next batten, again measure the length and cut before nailing.

  • At verges, take the battens to within about 25mm (1 inch) of the end of the underfelt.
  • At hips, allow enough space between the battens from the two sides so that a batten can be fixed along the top of the hip board.

Repeat this sequence for each batten up to the top of the roof.

Should any of the horizontal felt overlaps not coincide with a batten, fix an intermediate batten just to hold down the overlap, but ensure that if using tiles, there is enough room next to the primary batten for the tile nib.

You may need to slightly deviate from using the gauge for the top batten (any minor cutting errors in your gauges may add up over the height of the roof), adjust it as necessary.

Transfer case fluid and differential oil changes are cheap and easy. Replacing these components will cost you about $1,500 each—a high price to pay for neglect.

Clogged air filters lower car performances on many levels. Change your car’s air filter to increase power and gas mileage. An air filter replacement is one of the easiest DIY car repairs to do for worn out filters.

Oil change.

Oil change is relatively easy to do yourself with certain precautions. Avoid changing oil after driving your car recently since it can be very hot. You should wait at least a couple of hours after driving your car to change the oil. Tools for a DIY oil change are ratchet, oil filter, wrench, funnel, new oil, oil container, and oil filter.

Spark plugs.

This simple DIY procedure can make automobiles have better fuel consumption ratings and drive smoother. Spark plugs for most cars are cheap. Check the plug wires while replacing spark plugs too.

Windshield wipers.

Replace the worn out strips of rubber found on old wipers with new ones. Change windshield wipers for optimal driving conditions during rain. Basic tools are needed like a screwdriver and new wipers to change them.

Headlight bulbs.

Check the front of your car for burnt headlight bulbs in need of replacement. DIY headlight bulb change is possible for cars without sealed beam headlights. Be sure to get the right bulb for your car and save money by changing it yourself.

Dangling exhaust pipes.

If you hear extra car noises from the back of your car, it could be damaged pipe holders or structure. Most cars use rubber loops to hold exhaust pipes that can be damaged over time. Look under your vehicle for any broken hangers in the exhaust pipe and change accordingly.

Brake pads. 

Always keep brake pads in optimal conditions to avoid car accidents and injury. Brake pads are a key component of the brake system that should be properly maintained. Usual tools to change brake pads are a c-clamp, lug wrench, Allen wrenches, hammer, and jack, amongst other.

Fuel filters.

Fuel filters have an average price of $15 depending on the car, but can save hundreds of dollars from engine damage if changed regularly. Fuel filters are important to keep fuel injection and carburetor systems clean and working properly. Please, do note that it is imperative to release the fuel system pressure before replacing the fuel filter to avoid damage or injury.

Car radiator flush.

Automobiles’ cooling systems and radiators should be cleaned to keep engines cool. Radiators can build deposits what can clog the cooling system. Perform regular radiator flushes to keep the cooling system in optimal condition. Before removing the radiator cap, to flush the radiator, check that the engine is cool.

Gas Lifts

Why risk your noggin when you can replace gas lift cylinders yourself? Just buy new lifts at any auto parts store. Then have a helper hold the hood or liftgate while you disconnect and replace the worn lifts. Many styles simply unbolt using a metric socket set. Others connect with a ball and socket style connection held in place with a spring clip. To disengage the spring clip, simply shove a small flat blade screwdriver between the clip and the cylinder. Then pull the cylinder off the ball stud.

Replace Non-Headlight Bulbs

To access burned out license plate, side marker and fog light bulbs, just remove the retaining screws and pry off the lens. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket. Handle the new bulb with gloved hands or hold it with a paper towel to prevent skin oils from depositing on the thin glass — that can cause premature bulb failure. Then push the bulb into the socket until it clicks. Reinstall the lens and you’re done.

Lubricate Window Tracks

Freezing water can seep into the window tracks and create drag when you try to open the window. That drag can damage the window regulator cables, costing you almost $300. You can avoid the problem entirely by lubricating the window tracks with spray silicone or dry teflon spray lubricant. Lower the window and shoot the spray right into the front and back window track. Apply enough lube so it drips all the way down the track. Then operate the window through several open and close cycles to spread the lube along the entire track. Use glass cleaner and a paper towel to remove any spray that lands on the glass.

Most creepers are hard, flat, unpadded boards with tiny wheels that get stuck in cracks in your garage floor. Not this one! Here’s a creeper that’s not only comfortable but also convertible. Pull the release pin and lift up on one end and you’ve got a roll-around seat that’s the perfect height for working around wheels. The padding is extra thick and the wheels are extra-large 3-in. soft polyurethane, so the creeper rolls smoothly, even over debris and cracks. Family law is perhaps the one area of legal practice where the clients are the most susceptible to get over-billed by their lawyer. The reasons why clients are so vulnerable to getting ripped off by a divorce attorney is because divorce cases can be highly emotional for the client. Clients are typically angry, scared, or depressed and oftentimes not thinking at their rational best. Therefore, to a divorce lawyer, clients can be low-hanging fruit who are ripe for the picking. When divorce lawyers play on their clients’ emotions by urging them to fight unnecessarily, then client pays a high price for that game.

A lawyer shall not make an agreement for, charge, or collect an unreasonable fee or an unreasonable amount for expenses. The factors to be considered in determining the reasonableness of a fee include the following:

(1) the time and labor required, the novelty and difficulty of the questions involved, and the skill requisite to perform the legal service properly;

(2) the likelihood that the acceptance of the particular employment will preclude other employment by the lawyer;(3) the fee customarily charged in the locality for similar legal services;

(4) the amount involved and the results obtained;

(5) the time limitations imposed by the client or by the circumstances;

(6) the nature and length of the professional relationship with the client;

(7) the experience, reputation, and ability of the lawyer or lawyers performing the services; and

(8) whether the fee is fixed or contingent.

Although there may be nothing inherently unethical about a divorce lawyer charging his or her normal hourly rate to perform menial tasks, this type of billing may mean one of two things:

Lack of Efficiency – Your divorce lawyer isn’t efficient and isn’t making proper use of his or her staff such as secretaries or paralegals who cost much less per hour than the lawyer.

No Staff Support – Some lawyers, especially recent law school graduates, practice law without staff support or a paralegal. Although there’s nothing unethical or wrong about an attorney who does everything on their own, this type of billing can significantly increase the costs of your divorce.

Guesstimating Time – When lawyers bill, they’re required to keep contemporaneous records of their time. In other words, lawyers must record their time immediately, if not soon after, the time is spent. When lawyers don’t stay on top of their timekeeping and, instead, rely on their memory to later record time, they may record too little or too much time.

Some indications that your divorce lawyer may be guesstimating his or her time include:

Erratic Billing Practices – If your lawyer doesn’t send you bills on a regular schedule (such as the 1st of the month) but instead sends you bills at odd intervals, then your lawyer may not be keeping accurate records of his or her time.

Untimely Billing Entries – If your lawyer sends a bill each month, then you should expect to see all of your charges for that billing time period. However, if your lawyer is billing you for the month of March yet you see time for January too, then your lawyer may not be keeping accurate records.

All of these therapists are extremely useful, particularly when you have someone knowledgeable about the family law process. However, in my experience as a family law attorney, there are certain things to be aware of when using a therapist and being involved in a family law case.

Therapists Testifying in Court

First, your therapist probably does not want to testify, nor are they typically a very convincing witness on your behalf. A lot of therapists develop a relationship with their clients which is personal and private, in order for the therapy to be truly effective. They also often have a bias in favor of their client due to said relationship. It is the same as having your sister or brother or mother testify in your favor – a Judge will think “well, of course, they will sing your praises, they are your mother” and not a neutral party. Therapists can sometimes fall in the same category.

Don’t Delegate Decision-Making Authority

Another pitfall with utilizing a therapist in a divorce case has nothing to do with testimony nor disclosure. Instead, it has to do with letting a therapist or mental health treating professional “drive the bus” in the case. This is most likely to occur in a reunification therapy type of scenario.

For example, putting into an Allocation Judgment that the parties will take the recommendations of a therapist for purposes of increasing parenting time. The problem with doing this is that a lot of therapists are a bit conservative about pushing the children too far too soon in reunification therapy and they will err on the side of caution.

Subtotal – totals Items above (up to the last subtotal); useful when applying discounts/surcharges or separating labor from parts.

Discount – subtracts a percent or dollar amount of the line above.

Many users, not knowing any better, select the wrong Type. Some users select Service because it’s first in the list. Some use Inventory because it’s something they have on hand – like different kinds of nails for the shop or bags of flour for baked products. However, if these are Items you use but don’t resell, then they’re technically not Inventory – so use non-Inventory. You can change Other Charge, Non-Inventory or Inventory to a different Type, but you cannot change Service, Payment, or Discount to another Type.

Check with your accountant on this. If this is your first year and your taxes aren’t done, then it’s probably okay to say yes, but this can affect previous years’ numbers, so most times, it might be best to say no and find other ways to fix numbers from old transactions. If an Item was setup as a wrong Type and can’t be changed, then make it inactive and create a new Item.

Water testing instructions given out to residents include the requirement to remove the faucet’s aerator, a small filter, from the nozzle of the tap before sampling. Testers are asked to run cold water through the tap for two minutes, known as “pre-flushing”, at least six hours before the test

Research suggests both of these practices reduce the amount of lead flowing into the sample. Tests conducted by scientists at Tech showed that of 21 samples taken from households, 16 were found to have higher lead levels than the official results when tested under conditions that replicate how people use tap water.

Understanding the risks associated with postharvest water use and how to minimize them are important for produce safety.

The key things you need to do to ensure the safety of postharvest water are to:

Start with water that is the equivalent of drinking water.

Add a sanitizer to all postharvest water.

Change bulk/batch tank water when dirty.

Make sure water is at the appropriate temperature to avoid infiltration.

Clean and sanitize tanks/bins daily, making sure to reduce or eliminate pooled water.

Document all postharvest activities.

Start with water that is the equivalent of drinking water

Only use water that is the equivalent of drinking water (i.e., potable) to begin all postharvest activities. Water quality should be verified through testing. Water testing can be done by the farm or by the municipality or water supplier, but the water must be tested to know its quality. Contaminated water can contaminate produce, so starting with clean water is essential. If you are using a surface water source, you will need to treat the water and regularly test it to make sure the treatment process is working.

Add a sanitizer to all postharvest water

Postharvest water, even if it is potable at the start, may become contaminated by produce that contacts the water. Adding a sanitizer does not clean each individual piece of produce, but prevents cross contamination from the water to the produce and limits the build-up of pathogens in the water. It is critical to add a sanitizer to all batch/bulk water where many pieces of produce are submerged in the same water because the risk of cross contamination is highest at this step.

Change bulk/batch tank water when dirty

Anything added to the batch/bulk tank water can introduce contamination. Leaves, stems, dirt, and even harvest containers submerged in the water, can contaminate the water and reduce the effectiveness of sanitizers. To reduce food safety risks, bulk/batch water should be changed frequently or filtered. One way to monitor water quality is by measuring turbidity.

Due to its protected location underground, most ground water is naturally clean and free of contaminants. How can I tell if my fish tank water is healthy?

The key to healthy fish is healthy tank water. Here’s how to check your aquarium health and stop your fish looking green around the gills.

The easiest way to check your fish tank water is to buy a good all-round tester kit. The key things to look out for are ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. These compounds will be kept largely in check with a good mechanical, chemical and biological filter. But it’s a delicate balance, so check your tank’s water health regularly.


The number one killer of fish is ammonia. It forms the first part of your tank’s nitrogen cycle and comes from fish waste and uneaten food. Whether your aquarium is fresh or salt water, you want the ammonia level to be 0.0ppm or undetectable. Any higher and the water could be toxic for your fish and needs to be treated with an ammonia removal product. To stay on top of your aquarium’s ammonia levels, install an ammonia alert sensor.


The second part of the nitrogen cycle is nitrites. They are the result of ammonia being broken down by the natural bacteria in your tank. Again, nitrites are toxic and should be in concentrations no greater than 0.0ppm. To contain toxic nitrite levels during a cycle, use a conditioner.


Nitrates come from the break down of nitrites. This compound is not particularly dangerous for fish, but if levels rise it can become toxic and stresses a tank’s inhabitants. For freshwater tanks, nitrate should register below 40ppm. Acceptable levels vary among saltwater ecosystems but are generally lower. An appropriate filter media and regular water changes will keep nitrate levels down.

How treatment works

Water is collected from Lake through intake pipes deep below the lake and one to five kilometres away from shore.

Lake water passes through screens to remove large debris and then through filters to remove additional impurities. Water is disinfected by using either chlorine or ozone.

Alum or Poly Aluminum Chloride is added to the water to form a jelly-like substance that joins larger particles called floc, and goes through additional filtration.

The water travels though settling basins so larger particles settle to the bottom. The clear water at the top proceeds to filters containing gravel, sand and carbon to remove suspended impurities and bacteria.

Before water is pumped for distribution to homes and businesses, the following is added:

chlorine to destroy bacteria, algae and viruses

fluoride to help prevent tooth decay

ammonia to ensure chlorine levels remain consistent as water travels through the distribution system

phosphoric acid, which is used for corrosion control to help create a barrier between residential lead pipes and drinking water
